Face of a Man with Part of a Short Echeloned Wig
Old Kingdom
Not on view
This expressive face, with wide eyes and a pensive mouth, likely originates from a standing statue placed in the serdab of a mastaba tomb, a secluded chamber in the superstructure of Old Kingdom tombs that was filled with statues of the tomb owner and his family. The head dates to the end of the Old Kingdom, a period when a so-called second style arose, characterized by figures with prominent eyes and lean facial features.
