Studies of Horses' Heads

Giovanni Antonio da Brescia Italian
After Leonardo da Vinci Italian

Not on view

This engraving is based on several horse studies by Leonardo da Vinci. It shows three different views of a horse's head. At center, a three-quarter view is depicted, which is flanked by two different side views. The head on the left has been squared, which suggests that the print - or the drawing it reproduces - was meant to give guidance on the proportions of a horse's head. While it has been proposed that this engraving might have been meant as an illustration for Leonardo's treatise on proportions and anatomy, it is not certain the artist was directly involved in commissioning or overseeing the production of the print. It has traditionally been attributed to Zoan Andrea, an artist who has more recently been identified as Giovanni Antonio da Brescia.
