The Shop of M.Périer, Ironwork Merchant

Gabriel de Saint-Aubin French

Not on view

This design for a business card or an announcement shows an ironmonger's shop as if the façade were removed, presenting the interior as a theatrical tableau. In a setting cluttered with wares, a male customer discusses the merits of a lock with a female employee. This impression is an early, unfinished state on which the artist made certain additions in pen and ink to indicate where he intended to further work the plate.
