This print was made to illustrate a travel book by the French author Aubry de La Mottraye. The city of Falun received its privileges in 1641, being one of Sweden's larger cities with about 6,000 inhabitants. In 1687, the collapse of parts of the copper mine, upon which the city's economy depended, collapsed, creating a deep pit and precipitating a decline.
