Jūichimen Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion with Eleven Heads (Avalokiteshvara)

Japan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 224

Jūichimen Kannon is a manifestation of compassion worshipped in Esoteric Buddhism. Crowning the deity’s own head are eleven more—the lower ten are that of bodhisattvas and represent the stages toward enlightenment. They are topped by the head of Amida, the Buddha from whom Kannon emanates. The sculpture was originally worshipped at Kuhonji, a small Shingon school temple located northwest of Kyoto.
