Snuff Receptable

Not on view

This vessel was designed to hold snuff, a form of tobacco that is consumed from the nasal cavity. The form is known as djouzet el-tenfiha, and this name refers to the coconut material from which it is made. The chain with the small rod would have been used to break up the tobacco and extract the substance from the container.
