The Bishop of Assisi Giving a Palm to Saint Clare

German

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 14

This panel comes from an altarpiece devoted to the life of Saint Clare and made for the convent of the Poor Clares in either Nuremberg or Bamberg. The order was founded in 1212, with the help of Saint Francis of Assisi, depicted here on the left.

The figures stand out against a delicately tooled background. Animated gestures, rich textures, and a limited range of colors provide dramatic emphasis.
