An injured stag lying on a rock, as two deer lick his wounded back and others watch, with three grouse in the foreground at right. Based on a picture shown at the Royal Academy in 1856. The subject derives from an incident that resulted when Landseer fired a random shot to empty his barrel after a day of deer stalking, and unknowingly wounded a stag. At midnight the keeper called the artist and show him this moonlit scene.
