A dark-haired, elegantly dressed young woman holds an open letter and stands thoughtfully near a bowl of flowers. Brewthall painted figural subjects and landscapes in oil and watercolor, showing them at the Royal Academy and Grosvenor Gallery. He often represented young women, from various historical periods, considering proposals of love. The beauty of the figure here is enhanced by blossoms and fashionable contemporary attire--echoing contemporary works by John Everett Millais and artists associated with the Aesthetic movement. After being exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Brewthall’s painting was reproduced as a wood engraving by Gardner and published in a special supplement to the "Illustrated London News."
