Portrait of Odilon Redon
This introspective portrait of the symbolist painter Redon was made in preparation for a lithograph that featured on the cover of the periodical "Les Hommes d'aujourd'hui" (The Men of Today) in 1891. As founding members of the Société des Artistes Indépendents, the two artists had known each other and corresponded since 1884. Schuffenecker also collected Redon's work, acquiring a number of drawings and prints around the time he made this portrait.
