In 1871, the newly established Metropolitan Museum of Art commissioned preeminent French etcher Jules Jacquemart to create a series of prints reproducing paintings from the founding collection. For the title page, the artist drew inspiration from seventeenth-century French flower prints, such as those by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer.
