Ken Domon was one of postwar Japan’s most influential photographers. In 1957 he made this unflinching study of Hiroshima, the first city targeted by a nuclear weapon, the atomic bombed dropped by the U.S. Army Air Force on August 6, 1945. Designed by Shigejiro Sano, the publication was a milestone in Japanese photographic literature. It includes heartbreaking photographs of survivors, hospitals, orphanages, the blind, and families struggling to rebuild their lives.
