This image depicts the shrine of Shah Hamadan (Mir Sayyid Ali Hamdani)—an important saintly figure from Hamadan, Iran—in Srinagar, Kashmir. Built by Sultan Sikandar in the late 14th century, the shrine subsequently suffered several fires and the current structure dates to the eighteenth century.The photograph captures the woodwork panels and tall arches that surround the central structure in a striking interplay of banded shadows and stripes. A small boy stands by an outdoor grave.
