Street Shop, Srinagar, Kashmir 1990

Ram Rahman Indian

Not on view

A group of Kashmiri men and boys are captured in this striking picture. Their faces and the arrangement of the figures recall similar depictions of groups of men in the watercolor studies collected by William Fraser in the early 1800s, evoking a sense of timelessness. Yet this work also references Kashmir in its modern state. The figures are all dressed in phirans, or traditional Kashmiri robes, several made from the same checked cloth.
