Según los expertos, esta obra de grandes dimensiones y complejidad formal tal vez fue creada para exhibirla en los funerales de importantes miembros de un clan familiar dogón. La composición escultórica transmite un elocuente mensaje sobre la dualidad humana y la vinculación del hombre y la mujer, dos seres diferentes pero complementarios. Los cuerpos elongados de las figuras se representan con una serie de líneas verticales paralelas, atravesadas por elementos horizontales que actúan como lazos de unión. Con sobria elegancia y economía de detalles el artista ha destilado las esencias masculina y femenina, fundiéndolas en una unión armoniosa y perfectamente integrada.
