Los juegos de cajas, compuestos de cuatro elementos trilobulados que rodean una caja más grande redonda o en forma de flor, servían para guardar cosméticos o incienso. Esta pieza formó parte de un juego. Piezas similares en cerámica y bronce atestiguan que hubo cruces de influencias en diversos materiales. La exquisita factura y rica ornamentación de esta caja incrustada con fragmentos de madreperla y concha de carey marcan el punto álgido de la artesanía de la laca durante la dinastía Goryeo (918–1392).
