Tal vez destinado a una iglesia de la Alemania meridional, este tríptico marca un hito en la historia de la pintura paisajística europea. Los personajes son, de izquierda a derecha, San Juan Bautista bautizando a Cristo en el río Jordán, San Jerónimo, y San Antonio el ermitaño con los monstruos que le atormentan. El pintor, Joachim Patinir, ha invertido la relación habitual entre el fondo y las figuras, situándolas delante de un paisaje panorámico vasto y espléndido que el espectador es invitado a recorrer con la mirada, a la manera de una peregrinación.
