유럽 풍경화 역사의 이정표인 이 3연작은 남부독일에 있는 교회를 위해 만들어졌을 것입니다. 파티니르는 배경에 비해 인물들을 보통보다 더 크게 그렸습니다. 왼쪽에서 오른쪽으로, 요단 강에서 그리스도에게 세례를 주고 있는 사도 성 요한, 성 제롬, 은둔자 성 안토니오와 그를 공격했던 괴물들이 거대하고 화려한 전경의 앞쪽에 배치되어 있어 감상자로 하여금 순례하듯이 시각적 여정을 가도록 유도합니다.
