This painting may depict Meng Haoran (ca. 690–ca. 740), a Tang-dynasty poet celebrated for his landscape poems. Riding through a wind-bitten forest atop a stalwart, old donkey, the scholar hunkers down against the cold in a broad-brimmed hat and rumpled white robes. Inspired by nature’s majesty, power, and infinitude, the poet chants a verse as his assistant, hurrying along behind him, reaches for paper to record the inspiration.
