This unusual object was made by aligning photographs of interior wood paneling, such as one might find in a nineteenth-century drawing room. Although the photographer and his assistant included a photograph of a mirror in the center of the composition, it reflects not the trappings of a traditional bourgeois home but rather themselves with their camera in an open-air courtyard. The pleasurable visual game viewers play to make sense of this photograph harks back to a tradition of representing mirrored reflections, the most famous example of which is Velázquez's Las Meninas (1656; Museo del Prado, Madrid).
