[Fruit Stand, New York City]

Hanns Skolle American, born Germany

Not on view

Later to become a writer, painter, and world traveler, Skolle was a roommate of Walker Evans in the late 1920s. This carefully mounted drugstore print, Skolle's gift to Evans, documents the two men's shared fascination with the ever-shifting still-life presented by New York's shop-fronts: a subtly energetic microcosm of the city's restless appetites.
