New York #2

Hedda Sterne American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 919

This work testifies to Sterne’s longstanding preoccupation with urban architecture and engineering. With its heavily worked surface, bearing traces of brushwork and editing, it also demonstrates her investment in the process of painting. At the top is a rounded form, mostly white, surrounded by rings of yellow, black, white, and gray. The resultant halo effect suggests radiating beams of light, as if from a rising moon or a streetlamp. Superimposed over this shape are two sets of parallel bands anchored in a structure reminiscent of a cluster of bridges and elevated train tracks.
