Glazed Bowl

Armenian

Not on view

A heraldic bird, probably an eagle, with outstretched wings fills the interior of this imitation lusterware bowl. Lusterware was an expensive and complex ceramic process popular in the Islamic world; imported examples excavated at Dvin may have inspired this work. The style and palette of this polychrome copy is also found on other works excavated at Dvin, suggesting that they may have come from a local workshop.
