Fragment of a Khachkar
Not on view
At the top, Saint John the Baptist and the Virgin flank an enthroned Christ holding a Gospel Book open to the words "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12). These three figures form a Deesis, a group who intercede with God for mankind. Saint Peter and an angel are to their left and originally Saint Paul would have appeared next to the other angel to the right. Saint Matthew’s image on the lower left is a rare example of a seated evangelist on a khachkar. The inscription at the bottom identifies the donor of this object as a member of the Proshian family, who sponsored the monastery of Kech‘aris and donated the reliquary and mounted horseman in this gallery.
