Gospel Book

Armenian

Not on view

This Gospel Book was copied and illuminated by the scribe and artist Grigor the priest. Its female patron, Annay, used her "honestly earned assets," to commission the book as a memorial to herself, her mother T‘aguhi, and her father Melik‘shay. Annay’s sponsorship of this manuscript suggests that, at least in some echelons of fifteenth-century Armenian society, women had the means as well as the autonomy to spend their money as they wished.
