An Armenian Bishop

Armenian

Not on view

The noted Safavid Persian artist Afzal al-Husayni painted this Armenian cleric holding a gold-edged blue miter, the insignia of his office, in his left hand. The miter and the pectoral cross suspended from his neck identify him as a church patriarch, possibly Hakob IV, the catholicos of Etchmiadzin from 1655 to 1680. Originally from Isfahan, Hakob returned there in 1659 to have his installation as catholicos confirmed by Shah ‘Abbas II.
