Tapestry with Dragons and Flowers

Eastern Central Asia

Not on view

The dragons on this vividly colored textile twist their bodies in much the same way as the golden dragon does on the robe of Archbishop John in the manuscript on view nearby. Such images of dragons came from Mongol kingdoms at the eastern end of Armenian trade routes. Armenian elite often visited the Mongol court in Siberia, where honored visitors received rich robes in recognition of their importance.
