Reliquary Cross with Relics of Saint John the Baptist

Armenian

Not on view

In his History of the Armenians, the early Armenian historian Agat‘angeghos wrote that Saint Gregory the Illuminator brought relics of Saint John the Baptist to Armenia. This container for his relics has a hand similar to that on the arm reliquary of Saint Nicholas. The jeweled cross arms are more typical of later Armenian metalwork, evidence of the lasting veneration Armenians have given relics over the centuries.
