Saint Grigor of Narek stands as if dedicating his compelling mystical poems to Christ, who blesses him from heaven. Inspired by Byzantine donor portraits, the image presents the saint as equal to the intellectuals of the Byzantine Empire. In 2015, Pope Francis recognized Saint Grigor of Narek as a Doctor of the Church, one of the highest honors of the Catholic Church and evidence of the lasting impact of the saint’s writings.
