Capital

Armenian

Not on view

Crosses were popular decorations in Armenian medieval art, as seen on this capital, which has large equal-armed crosses set in medallions flanked by stylized trees on its face and side. The capital is from the earliest building stage at Yererouk, one of the largest and most elaborate early churches in Armenia. Yererouk’s rectangular basilica form was typical of the first Armenian churches.
