Bas-Relief of an Angel

Armenian

Not on view

Sculpture decorated the interior and exterior of many medieval Armenian churches. At the monastery of Bghen (also known as Bghen-Noravank‘), carved stone slabs depicting such scenes as the Annunciation to the Virgin, the Oil-Bearing Women at the Tomb of Christ, the Ascension of Christ formed part of the church’s sculptural program. This angel, seated in three-quarter view toward the left, was a part of that narrative.
