Buddha

Central Thailand

Not on view

This classic Dvaravati standing Buddha displays all the stylistic traits of an early work. The robes clearly define the form beneath in the manner of contemporaneous Buddha imagery from the Sarnath school of northern India. The hands (now missing) were probably raised in the gesture of exposition, a favored convention in early Dvaravati Buddha imagery. Although found in Ayutthaya, the figure was likely made in Nakhon Pathom, a major Dvaravati center. It was routine practice for Thai rulers to transport revered icons to their new capital to enhance the ruler’s status and the efficacy of the temples erected there.
