Andrew

Alice Neel American

Not on view

This characteristically intimate and candid nude portrait shows Neel’s infant grandson, child of Hartley and Ginny Neel, from the point of view of a caretaker peering straight down onto his vulnerable bare body. As with other depictions of babies and young children, the artist’s linear painting style—especially her distinctive blue contour line—effectively conveys Andrew’s restless, wiggling movements. In 2007, Andrew directed an illuminating documentary film about his grandmother.
