Luise von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen of Prussia

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun French

Not on view

The beauty of Queen Luise (1776–1810) is attested by many portraits and was equaled only by her keen intelligence. An avid reader and shrewd politician, she exerted great influence over her husband, Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. The artist painted the portrait in Paris from an earlier pastel study done from life. The palette is pale and the technique is smooth and highly finished.
