From its perch atop Madison Square Garden’s tower, the resplendent gilded Diana enjoyed iconic status on the New York City skyline from 1892 to 1925. An earlier, larger version was displayed on top of the Agriculture Building at the Chicago fair. Saint-Gaudens capitalized on the sculpture’s fame by issuing variant reductions of the lithe goddess about to release her arrow. The lustrous patina of this smaller cast was achieved by electroplating a mixture of gold, copper, and zinc to the bronze surface.
