During his summer travels in 1870, Sargent revealed his interest in portraiture in a number of careful studies. This watercolor was originally pasted into the "Splendid Mountain Watercolours" sketchbook (50.130.146).

Sargent made several careful portrait studies at Mürren (50.130.146z verso and 50.130.146bb verso). Frau von Allmen appears with an accompanying inscription in 50.130.146oo verso. Here she is shown with an aged man in a highly detailed and meticulously rendered interior.
