Cole era affascinato dalle curve strane che il fiume Connecticut forma ai piedi del monte Holyoke e fece del cosiddetto meandro abbandonato (The Oxbow) il soggetto di questo grande e intenso dipinto. La scena è pervasa dal misterioso bagliore che segue a un temporale. I boschi sulla montagna sono ancora in ombra per le nuvole scure che li ricoprono, mentre il fiume sinuoso e i campi intorno luccicano luminosi. L’artista ha contrapposto la natura selvaggia a un ambiente pastorale per dare risalto alle possibilità implicite nel paesaggio nazionale, trasfigurando la realtà locale con la sua visione ed immaginazione artistica.
