Stalking Panther

Founder Cast by Roman Bronze Works
1891–92, revised mid 1890s, this cast ca. 1902
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 765
Proctor based an early version of Stalking Panther on childhood observations in Colorado and studies of panthers in New York’s Central Park Zoo. In 1894 he went to Paris and continued refining the composition, using a shaved cat for anatomical reference. The revised statuette of an elongated cat midstride, seen here, is a psychologically engaging study of predatory motion toward unseen prey, reflecting the artist’s interest in depicting animals as forces of uncivilized nature.
