Contrassegnato due volte sul retro con il marchio del castello di Versailles, questo comò ad ante (commode à vantaux) fa parte dell’inventario del 1792 degli appartamenti privati di Luigi XVI. Roentgen, il più importante ebanista europeo del Settecento, serviva una clientela internazionale, tra cui diversi principi tedeschi, Maria-Antonietta e Caterina la Grande, creando mobili dal disegno innovativo dotati di astuti dispositivi meccanici. Le tre scene ad intarsio sulla parte anteriore di questo mobile raffigurano palcoscenici e la scena centrale mostra personaggi della commedia dell’arte italiana.
