Uno dei temi preferiti nelle opere di Chardin, grande pittore naturalista, erano i giochi dei bambini. In questa tela che risale al 1734 circa, per il formato e per il soggetto trasse ispirazione dalla tradizione della pittura olandese di genere del Seicento. Non sappiamo con certezza se egli volesse trasmettere un messaggio con questo dipinto, ma le bolle di sapone all’epoca venivano intese come un’allusione alla caducità dell’esistenza. Versioni successive di questo stesso tema sono oggi conservate presso il Los Angeles County Museum of Art e la National Gallery of Art di Washington.
