シャボン玉遊び (シャボン玉吹き)

無心な子供の遊びは、偉大な自然派の画家だったシャルダンの最もお気に入りのテーマでした。1734年頃に描かれたこの作品は、形式と主題の両面において17世紀のオランダの風俗画の伝統に発想を得ています。この作品にメッセージ性が込めらているかどうかは定かではありませんが、当時シャボン玉は命のはかなさを暗示するものとされていました。この主題を扱った後年の作品がロサンゼルス郡立美術館とワシントン・ナショナルギャラリーに収蔵されています。
