Nel 1912 l’industriale e banchiere Otto Primavesi, uno dei sostenitori finanziari della ditta Wiener Werkstätte, commissionò questo ritratto della figlia Mäda. La modella posò nello studio dell’artista a Vienna, dove Klimt aveva dipinto anche un ritratto della madre di Mäda, l’attrice Eugenia Primavesi (nata Butschek), nel 1914. In un nutrito gruppo di studi a matita, Klimt provò una varietà di pose prima di scegliere questa postura diritta, rivolta in avanti che esprime la vivacità della bambina di nove anni.
