Il Maestro dell’Osservanza, un allievo dell’artista senese Sassetta, è famoso per una serie di otto scene raffiguranti la vita di sant’Antonio Abate. In questa tavola, la tendenza del pittore di descrivere particolari fortemente naturalistici è evidente nel paesaggio arido che ricorda la regione montagnosa vicino al Mar Rosso dove il santo eremita visse gli ultimi decenni della sua vita. In primo piano, sant’Antonio rifiuta un mucchio d’oro (ben presto cancellato dal dipinto), resistendo alla tentazione dei beni materiali.
