荒野の聖アントニウス

シエナの画家サセッタの教え子だったオッセルヴァンツァ聖堂の画家は、聖アントニウスの生涯を描いた8枚の連作画で最もよく知られています。この板絵では、隠遁者だったこの聖人が生涯の最後の数十年を過ごした、紅海付近の荒涼とした山岳地帯を彷彿とさせる風景に、非常に写実的な詳細を描くことを好んだこの画家の特徴が表れています。前景には、聖アントニウスが積まれた金貨を前に後ずさりし、世俗的な誘惑に抵抗する様子が描かれていました(この絵が描かれて間もない頃に削り取られました)。
