La ditta newyorkese dei fratelli tedeschi emigrati Gustave e Christian Herter produceva mobili di lusso e progetti di interni integrati per i clienti dell’età dell’oro americana. Lavoravano con una varietà di stili, tra cui il design inglese riformato e quello anglo-giapponese utilizzati in questo mobile, resi popolari dall’architetto inglese E. W. Godwin. La superficie ebanizzata dell’armadio e gli intarsi dorati di foglie e crisantemi stilizzati ricordano le lacche giapponesi; anche lo spazio vuoto nero intenso che fa da sfondo ai fiori che cadono ricorda le regole ornamentali dell’arte asiatica.
