カサットはこの作品で、母の従妹メアリー・ディッキンソン・リドル夫人が、上位中流階級の女性の日課であるお茶席を主宰する場面を描いています。夫人は夫人の娘がカサット家に贈った、金装飾のついた広東製青白磁器ティーセットのティーポットを手にしています。この贈物のお返しとして描かれたこの肖像画は、スケッチのような仕上げ、身体的特徴にこだわらない描写、そしてモデルが鑑賞者に無関心であることなど、カサットが印象派の技法に精通していたことを示しています。リドル夫人の娘が作品を嫌ったため、カサットはH. O. ヘーヴマイヤー夫人に当館への寄贈を説得されるまで公開せずに保管していました。
