Design for Marble Pulpit, St. Paul's Universalist Church, Meriden, Connecticut

Designer Possibly Jacob Holzer American, born Switzerland
1893
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 692
Of the surviving Tiffany drawings of individual components for church furnishings, this example is among the most highly finished. The pulpit was to be fabricated in brilliant white and contrasting green-figured marble, framed by mosaic detailing. The draftsman simulated the texture of highly polished marble by applying a varnish or glaze over the green areas, giving a sheen to the normally soft matte paper surface.
