ガイウス帝(カリギュラ)の胸像
カリギュラ帝を表したこの見事な胸像は、彼の曽祖父アウグストゥスの時代の正統派の肖像の様式を踏襲し、ユリウス・クラウディウス朝の統一性と連続性を強調しています。しかしながら、ここではカリギュラの個性が捉えられており、頭と顎を誇り高く上げた様子や、薄く締まった口元などは、彼を悪名高い皇帝にせしめたうぬぼれや残忍さをほのめかしていると思われます。カリギュラが君臨した期間は短く、彼が28歳で暗殺された後は、肖像の多くが破壊されたり、彫りなおされたり、またテベレ川へ捨てられました。
