屋外の自立式記念碑として作られたこの作品は、アフリカとインド洋の美術的伝統が融合した地域の最高傑作と評価されています。ありありと表現されている男女間の根本的な補完的関係性は、マダガスカルの精神生活における重要なテーマでした。静かな力強さと軽やかでバランスのとれた対称性をもつこの作品は、アフリカ南東部で作られ西洋美術に影響を与えた数少ない彫刻作品のひとつです。20世紀初頭のパリですでに注目されていたこの作品は、1922–23年頃にイギリスの彫刻家ジェイコブ・エプスタイン卿のコレクションに収蔵されました。
