墓石

このパルミラのある一家のものと思われる墓石は、男性と息子、そしてふたりの娘の晩餐の場面を高浮彫りで表しています。紀元 1 世紀半ば頃のパルミラ(「パームヤシの生える場所」の意)は、パルティアが支配する中近東と、ローマ領の地中海の港を結ぶキャラバン・ルートにある、壮大で裕福な都市でした。その後全盛期には生活習慣や衣服にイラン–パルティア様式と西方のギリシャ・ローマ様式の双方が取り入れられ、このふたつの様式のブレンドはパルミラの美術品にも表れています。
